    Red-crowned parakeets
    (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae)
are now scarce throughout both the North and South Islands. On off-shore islands and Stewart Island they are numerous. Yellow-crowned parakeets, a close relative of the red-crowned parakeet, have managed to survive on mainland New Zealand.
